Prior to 1867 St Vincents Orphanage accommodated both boys and girls and up until 1974. The Sisters of Mercy were in charge.  By 1955 the homes capacity was 150 bed for Roman Catholic Boys aged 9 to 16 years but over half its residents were wards of the state.

By 1893 St Vincents accommodated about 60 boys in six self contained units and kept sibling groups together.  In 1997 St Vincents boys home became part of MacKillop Family Services and by 1999, was redeveloped as part of the Transitional Integrated Education Residential Services Project.
