St Magdalen’s Retreat was established in 1887 and was used by the NSW Government as a care institution for females over the age of 12 years.  It also accepted voluntary admissions from families who could not care for young women.  The Retreat was located at Tempe was run by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan.

In 1948 the retreat became known as the Good Samaritan Training Centre.
