Opened by the Premier, Hon R J Heffron and occupied almost 200 boys in its early days from the age of 14 – 16 years.  In early days some inmates were transferred to Mt Penang Training School.

Thre premises consisted of three classrooms, two metalwork rooms, two woodwork rooms, two craft rooms, a science room and a library.

There were four “houses”bearing names from the language of the Darul Tribe – Bunda, Daru Kumu and Wolara.
