Wellington Valley Mission
Wellington Valley
NSW
Australia
Provider: Church Missionary Society then Anglican Church
Year Opened: 1832
Year Closed: 1844
Wellington Valley Mission was founded by Rev. William Watson and Rev Johann Simon Christian Handt of the Church Missionary Society. They were granted 10,000 acres (40 km2) and ₤500 per annum to run the mission. The Mission was one of the earliest to “Civilize and Christianize” Aboriginal people in Australia.
The priests involved in this Mission publicly split over whether Aboriginal children should be forcibly removed from their parents and the Aboriginal people’s resistance to an attempt to do so, was a significant factor in its demise.
It closed in 1844.
