Suttor Cottage was one of a series of cottages that made up Mittagong Cottage Homes.  Mittagong Cottage Homes operated between 1885 – 1976.  Some time in the 1940s, the cottages were given names. The names were usually those of people who had been significant in the history of the Child Welfare Department.

The Suttor Cottage is amongst the oldest purpose built building on the site which has been associated with children’s welfare facilities since the late 19th century.

Site of original Renwick Cottage (now demolished) was adjacent to Suttor House.

In 1947 Mittagong Cottage Home became known as Mittagong Training School for Boys. The Mittagong Cottages were later renamed Renwick, and closed in the early 1990s. The site was sold by the New South Wales Government in the 1990s, to Landcom.  Some of the cottages remain, but the site has been subdivided and developed.
