This refuge started off as a place for women who wished to “reform themselves”  but eventually accommodated up to 36 children.  The emphasis then turned to looking after young unmarried mothers and their babies and they were allowed to say until their child reached three at which point they had to leave or if they wanted to stay, their child was to be transferred to another orphanage.
