In addition to providing psychiatric services under the provisions of the Mental Health Act, 1958 (Act No 45, 1958), the North Ryde Psychiatric Hospital contained several specialty units, including a Thoracic Unit, dedicated to the control of tuberculosis in all State Mental Hospitals, a Neuropathology Department, a Surgical Unit opened in September 1961, and a Children’s Unit. In November 1961 an Admission centre was opened, which replaced the Admission Centre at Darlinghurst.
By 1 May 1981 North Ryde Psychiatric Centre was known as the Macquarie Hospital, North Ryde, with wards gazetted as a Mental Hospital.
On 29 January 1993 premises at Gladesville Hospital and Macquarie Hospital were revoked as hospitals, and were amalgamated to form the Gladesville Macquarie Hospital. All inpatient services had been consolidated onto the Macquarie site at North Ryde by June 1997.
