Located at 41 Camperdown Road, Miramar, Wellington. Miramar Detention Centre or Girls’ Home was a district home that provided short to medium-term care and assessment for girl on remand or in need of shelter from the Lower North Island. It was a former hotel that had been converted to a girls’ home. The exact opening date is unknown, but it is noted they started receiving girls in the early 1950s. The home provided for the reception and short term care of 12-16 year olds who were in the custody of the department and for whom a community living situation was impractical. The average length of stay for girls was 35 days.
