Miramar Girls Home

Located at 41 Camperdown Road, Miramar, Wellington. Miramar Girls Home was a district home that provided short to medium term care and assessment for girl on remand or in need of shelter from the Lower North Island. It was a former hotel that had been converted to a girls home. The exact opening date is unknown, but it is noted they started receiving girls in the early 1950s. The home provided for the reception and short term care of 12-16 year olds who were in the custody of the department and for whom a community living situation was impractical. The average length of stay for girls was 35 days.
