Allendale Girls Home
Situated in the suburb of Mount Albert in Auckland. Allendale was a district girls home that opened in 1961. It took girls in from a range of ages from as young as 11 all the way to 19. Most of the residents were state wards and some were picked up by police as missing from home or found at the waterfront. Allendale was a short to mid term institution after which most girls returned home. As the number of girls increased over time, it was noted that the behaviour of girls increased in severity also.
